Sipura 841 Hardware Phone Review

Sipura SPA-841

Having had my 841 for a couple months now I can safely say that this is a reliable product with, as expected, some minor niggles.

Overview

The phone is the standard corporate black with soft rubberised keys which feel nice and tactile. You can connect a headset to the phone but I've not tested this. The speaker phone is loud and clear, and the built in microphone seems to work well (no complaints from people I've spoken to using it).

The device connects to your network using a standard RJ45 terminated ethernet cable and can use DHCP/BOOTP to configure the IP address side of life or you can statically configure the IP address etc.

The phone can support two lines out of the box -each of which can be configured independently. Upgrade to four line capability is available from Sipura by purchasing a licence key which unlocks the other two lines.

Issues

Configuration: The configuration pages are detailed and let you change everything you'd want. Only problem is there is no online help on the web front end to explain what the values actually are.

Refuses to reconnect: After dropping a link when my broadband is restarted or other problems occur with the connection it usually results in the phone having to be power cycled.

Backlight on LCD: There isn't one. Enough said.

Dial patterns: Too complex - needs to have an easy to use guided editor available.

Conclusion:
An excellent device which provides good audio quality with easy firmware upgrades which don't seem to erase configuration data. Can't really ask for much more - the reconnect problem I've yet to 100% pin down to the phone it might be my router.

If you want a good quality hardware phone at a reasonable price this is one to look out for.

This is the predecessor to the current Linksys IP phones. While you can't get the SPA841 anymore, you can get the SPA941 which works great with VoIP phone systems.
