Mitel 5215 Review

Mitel VoIP

The Mitel 5215 is Mitel's standard Business phone that now comes in a dual boot format. On inital bootup you can interupt the boot and change protocol to SIP.
The set is of true business quality and has a solid feel about it.

Features

Support for SIP or MiNET protocols

Dedicated headset jack
Speed calling
Conference call setup
Page Send / Receive
Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) agent support
Customizable center panel

The set seems to be compatible with Asterisk, I have had on now for 2 months and other than a small niggle that you can't dial numbers starting with * or # (which on Asterisk is overcome by editing the features.conf to change pickup to something other than *8), and also the dialplan setup on the phone which is not too well documented, it works faultlessly with good quality speech. The message light is compatible with Asterisk and by programming in the address of the vm you can get messages by pressing the message key.

The set has an RRP of £155 + VAT in the UK and approx. £15 for the inline power supply.

This is a solid business telephone, but there are better IP phones for open source PBX systems like Asterisk. I like the Linksys SPA series and the new HD VoIP phones from Polycom for my deployments.
