Sipura SPA-1001 Review

Sipura 1001

First Impressions

This unit is not much larger than a value size box of matches, weighing just under 80 grams, and plugged straight into my Netgear DG834 router bringing, via a US to UK phone adapter, my old DECT phone back into service.

Connectivity and Features

CODEC Support: G.711 A-law & u-law, G.726, G.729a, G.723.1
VoIP Protocols Supported: SIP v2
SIP Features: Call hold, Call waiting, Caller ID Indication

The SPA-1001 features one RJ-11 socket for connection to existing analog phones, fax machines or PBX. An RJ45 provides the Ethernet interface for connection to the LAN.

Note that if you use an old DECT phone, you will need an adapter with a ring capacitor. The unit came with a single sheet installation and setup guide.

The SPA-1001 supports the Sipura "VSP" feature ("Virtual Services Port"). According to the Sipura website, With VSP users can configure the SPA-1001 to register with two independent VoIP services. Inbound calls on each can have a distinctive ring and outbound calls are supported using a configurable dialed access code, e.g. 9 or #. A conversation with a party on VoIP service #1 can be conferenced with a party on VoIP service #2 by using the three-way conferencing feature on the SPA-1001.

Setting up

There is a full 80 odd page guide on Sipura’s web site, however I did not need to refer to it. Within an hour I had upgraded to the latest firmware (needed to use the 2 ‘lines’), connected to the voipuser outbound service on one line and sipgate.co.uk on the other.

Sipura’s web site also contains a very useful introduction guide to domestic voip which explains most things. The number of settings available on the setup utility looks daunting but I just took the default settings and added in the configuration details from the service providers. To be able plug it in and make and receive phone calls is all I want at this stage. I did not even have to make any changes to my router settings.

Conclusion

In summary, a powerful but easy to use unit that allows one analogue phone to use two different VoIP accounts with call waiting, distinctive ringtones, conferencing between the two and diverting features.

Calls have connected fine and speech quality is good. All-in-all, an excellent unit and it deserves its overall score of 9/10.

This was one of the best VoIP adapters ever. Although you can't find this one anymore, the same technology is now inside Linksys VoIP adapters like the PAP2T, the SPA2102 and SPA3102. All three of which I highly recommend.
