Hi All!
Hope you could help me with this. I just installed Voipax and I ran the speaker and microphone tests and everything worked perfectly. Then, I called my friend's mobile phone and she could hear me perfectly, but I could not hear anything. I wonder what the problem would be and how to fix it. Can anybody help me?
Thanks! |

Welcome to Voipuser forums.
The test that you ran were only to find out if the speaker and microphone were working. The next thing to try is to find out if an echo test will work. If you use a voipuser account and can log in OK then you can try our echotest at 08449863246.
Since you were able to hear your Voipax call in one direction then you likely have a problem with NAT traversal with you system. It is not possible to diagnose the problem as you have given no information about your method of calling (router, computer etc). If you can activate STUN on your phone/client then try that as it might solve the problem. |

Hi,
It's a UK number, isn't it? So if I want to call I should put 0044 in front of that number? I actually tried but I couldn't connect. I tried my friend's phone again and it still didn't work. Oh yeah, and I'm calling from my computer.
With Skype, I can call on everybody's phone without a problem. |

If you are logged into Voipuser through a Voip client such as zoiper or X-Lite then all you need to dial is 08449863246 to make the voip (free) call. Skype will call PSTN and charge you for it.
Skype uses its own protocol and has different requirements. SIP is a different matter and will not use your computer to provide service. You can download a SIP client free (eg. X-Lite or Zoiper). When you were trying to call the cellphone number from the Voipax client (21 cents/min)? |

I will try to call that number with x-lite later, but what is SIP? I don't get it at all. I tried with Voipax last night and a couple of minutes ago, still didn't work |

Most internet phone providers use SIP or a variation on it. With SIP your conversation is broken into small data packets that are transported over the internet and reassembled into your conversation at the other end. With your setup the packets are getting through in one direction but not the other. In fact the packets are probably going to the wrong place and are lost. Using STUN is one method to get the packets to the correct place and another is to forward ports so that the packets are sent and can get to the right place.
SIp is very widely used and there may be better ways to make your calls. Perhaps you can use iNUM (world number). Does you friend have a computer, a PSTN phone, "free" phone airtime? |

I just tried the echo test with x-lite and it worked. I could hear myself.
So.....why it didn't happen when I used Voipax?
I called my friend from my computer to her mobile phone, using her airtime I suppose.
In the 'advanced' settings in Voipax, there are the audio codecs, behind NAT/local IP (option Yes/No), Use DNS (Yes/No), call signal (Yes/No), DTMF (Auto, Inband, Outband). I don't know if that would help, but just in case..... |

Voipax may not allow you to call 0844 numbers. Where are you and where are you trying to call? Is there a local call number near your friend? In order to help you more you need to give a bit more information about the calls you are trying to make. |

Hi!
Thanks a lot for the help so far! I think it was the internet connection that caused it, although I don't actually know how. I'm using another connection and it works now. This is all so confusing.
I did learn something from here, but I wish I knew more. |
