We currently offer a community funded VoIP termination service to our members to enable them to test and experiment with Voice over IP.
To understand how this works, please see the following thread in the forum : VoIP Outbound
You don't really need to anyway - the main point is it does work. You can think of us like a Telco but instead of making any profit we don't charge people for calls. Our inbound PSTN traffic pays for the outbound PSTN traffic. That's the simplest way I can put it.
The important thing to remember is that the VoIP User Community Service is not free. It relies on that inbound PSTN traffic to pay the bills.
Each member has an "account rating" which is displayed in your control panel. Members making excessive use of outbound PSTN access without contributing anything back to the community will get disconnected when that account rating drops below a certain threshold.
If you do make excessive use of the system and wish to rectify the situation, we now accept PayPal donations - a program that has been very succesful.
Membership at VoIP User also gives you access to free UK local rate or premium rate numbers. You will also have full access to the VoIP User Control Panel which will let you terminate these numbers to IAX, SIP or landline/mobile telephones in most countries in the World.
We also run a fax to email service that you can use with your own dedicated number.
The most important question. VoIP User is not a service provider. We make provision of service available to enable you, from technical engineer to consumer, to experiment and test out systems and ideas.
These PSTN gateway services are really only a minor fraction of what VoIP User is about. Our members also contribute independant reviews of VoIP hardware and software devices, and we have a very active forum.
You need to log-in ;-)
