Here's one from the "stranger than fiction" department - a research lab at the University of Melbourne has created a system whereby diamonds are used in fibre optic cables to reduce the transmission of date in a cable to a single photon stream.

Not of much use to the casual reader here, but a fascinating read if you've got a spare couple of mintes:-
