Vodafone Portugal offer VOIP Webphone

Written by gray on Apr 25, 2007 - 05:18 PM

This interesting initiative from the Portuguese division of Vodafone at least acknowledges the existance of VOIP and their interest in experimentation. They offer a PC Softphone using the same user info as a standard GSM client account. The web based application is able to make or receive calls to and from Vodafone Portugal at standard tarrifs.

The main advantage being the ability to make calls back to Portugal from a PC whilst outside the country and being able to receive inbound calls from Portugal with no forwarding cost if outside the country.

Cool idea, I'd like this for my mobile account. I've noticed in the past though that Vodafone subsidiaries are left on a fairly long leash with regard to creating their own services and partnerships, so I won't expect it to come to the UK soon.

That is pretty slick. I can't read the Portuguese, but can I take it that any calls made are charged to you through your regular mobile phone bill?

Yes - exactly that unless both parties are using the Api in which case its free

Then it's a brilliant idea. So basically when I'm out of Portugal I can make calls without the usual horrific roaming charges.

If that was available in the UK I'd sign up immediately. It offers convenience of billing and cost saving, coupled to my usual phone number.

If they could take that a stage further and incorporate it into a WiFi enabled handset, so that you could use your regular phone from a WiFi access point, they'd not only have a killer product, but one that might just get them out of all the current hot water and bad publicity.

Your move Vodafone.
