Tip of the hat to
Webware who point us to this interesting new widget from
YackPack which mashes up click to talk with push to talk, walkie-talkie style.
The claimed
zero configuration should mean you can just drop it onto any page, blog or web form. It comes in three flavours - the first has a live start system so audio (others talking) starts streaming immediately using the URL for the page as the "channel", the second is an "opt-in" version and finally one that works on a consistent (single) "channel" throughout your entire site.
This is a concept that I can really see catching on with community sites. In fact, the possibilties of spur of the moment talk sessions is really quite intriguing.
In a small business environment I think this kind of technology works equally well. Who needs phones? With push to talk, there are no feedback issues, which means you just keep your speakers on and crank up the volume. When someone shouts over the system, you go to the mic and respond.
There are other systems being developed.
Jaxtr have one, as do
SnapVine, but I like the elegance of the WalkieTalkieWidget.
There are a lot of opportunities for the taking here. If you could mashup the WalkieTalkie widget with a system for queuing the "push to talk" button, in a set sequence, then you could use it to have a fully moderated panel discussion online. That would bring the Webinar concept bang up to date.
