Adobe Apollo : Build The Ultimate VoIP Mash-up?

Written by dean on Mar 19, 2007 - 03:03 PM

Regulars here will be aware of the all the Adobe/Flash/VoIP talks last year when Dr. Henry Sinnreich joined Adobe.

Om Malik made an interesting observation at the time:-

Quote:
The gulf between the voice geeks and web developers is one of the biggest challenges facing the Voice 2.0. The vibrancy of Flash developer community, and open source projects such as Asterisk could become a new font of “Voice 2.0” innovation.

I agreed with Om, but it just seemed to fritter out.

Until now. Adobe has given us a glimpse of its "new" Apollo architecture:-

Quote:
Apollo is the code name for a cross-operating system runtime being developed by Adobe that allows developers to leverage their existing web development skills (Flash, Flex, HTML, JavaScript, Ajax) to build and deploy rich Internet applications (RIAs) to the desktop.

The BETA previews can be seen here:-

This is more like it. Here we take the traditional (Java, Flash, HTML) web developer, and we give him a tool that enables him to build a desktop application.

You can watch Mike Downey, senior product manager for Apollo, demo an eBay branded Apollo application here:-

Last October Adobe committed to the creation of a $100m Venture Capital fund with which to invest in startups using their technology.

This is going to create some interesting output in the VoIP/IM space. Keep an eye on it.
