Having continuously denied to comment on the subject, Google have finally let this cat out of the bag:-

Quote:
The head of Google in Spain and Portugal has confirmed that Google is working on a mobile phone. "Some of the time the engineers are dedicated to developing a mobile phone," Isabel Aguilera is quoted as saying on the Spanish news Web site Noticias.com.

Quote:
Earlier this month, Simeon Simeonov of Polaris Venture Partners wrote in his blog that an inside source told him the Google Phone will be a BlackBerry-like device running C++ at the core with an operating system bootstrap and optimized Java and that it would offer voice over Internet Protocol.

"No we're not!"

OK, well you can't blame a certain amount of speculation Wink

Alan Eustace, Senior VP of engineering and research at google stated:-

"We're not doing a mobile phone. I'd like to find something that is broader, rather than do yet another mobile device."

"Right now it is very difficult for companies to deploy applications," he said. "Mobile is a space where it's very difficult to reach a lot of users. That's a premise we're thinking about."

That's an interesting comment, given that there are - and always will be - waaaaaay more mobile users than PC users. Perhaps what he means is that carriers [O2, Vodafone, Verizon, et al] don't want to give their subscribers unfettered access to Google's apps.
