Gizmo Launch A Flash Based VoIP Widget
Written by dean on Jan 30, 2007 - 02:08 PM
Last year we had Busta and Mexuar. The first launch this year of a web-embedded telephone device is GizmoProject who have decided to base theirs on the Adobe Flash API:-
https://www.gizmocall.com/
That means we now have one ActiveX SIP client, one Java based IAX client and now a Flash based client.
What is not clear is what protocol GizmoCall runs on, and it's success will almost certainly turn on it. I assume that it's H.263 as that's all that's available in Flash at the moment, as I understand it.
Gizmo are not Skype, and haven't got in early enough to gain mass market share on a custom (or non-widely adopted) protocol. These widgets need to be provider agnostic - lack of that will be problematic for Gizmo in the future. Client churn needs to be addressed by offering value and service, not lock-ins.
And being Flash based puts them head to head with Adobe (who, you may remember, hired Dr. Henry Sinnreich last June) who could at any moment launch a SIP based FlashPhone (now that would be something).
In principle though I like seeing things like this actually being built - even if it is old-skool H.263.
Are we witnessing the slow death of the softphone client desktop application?

Hi Dean,
I believe gizmocall.com is Sipphone or Gizmo Project's concern and not PhoneGnome's.
What is very interesting about Gizmocall.com is the fact that you can call any Google Talk or Windows Live Messenger user. Also noteworthy is the fact that you can call any OPEN SIP user which leads me to believe that it is SIP based as opposed to H.263.
Gizmocall.com will become more meaningful when they implement inbound calls, so that it will become sort of complete softphone replacement, if you will.

The line SipPhone in the bottom right of the page may be a clue

Hey guys,
What's the JAVA IAX Client you're referring to? I just saw the ActiveX client, which I wouldn't use because you rely on MS
Thanks
M

It appears Mexuar is the Java IAX SIP client (for Asterisk PBX?). Busta is the ActiveX SIP client and GizmoCall is the Flash SIP client.
