Skype and Click To Call

Version 2.6 of Skype has been released and the ability to recognise a phone number in a web page and click to call is now a standard feature rather than via the toolbar.

Good thinking. I personally thing this is why the existing "Click, enter your number and we'll call you back" type systems from companies like eStara will not be around for very long.
Ultimately, I think we'll all be using click to call. But it'll be numbers or contact URI's embedded in web pages that work the system, not users typing in their phone numbers and clicking a "call me back" button.
I'm glad that at least Skype are working on the recognition of numbers/contact points in web pages. I'd really like to see some SIP/IAX2 based softclient developers doing the same. And without the use of callto: tags...

I agree with you that eventually we'll all be using click to call, but I think what companies like eStara provide is an easy method to adopt this technology. Consumers want choice. When they use click to call, they want to connect with a business in a manner they're comfortable with. The reality is that most consumers are more comfortable talking over the phone than through their PCs. However, eStara, in fact, already provides PC to Phone connectivity in addition to the more popular callback method you described. It's a very thin applet that installs much quicker than Skype, it allows consumers to place calls for free to the businesses that offer the service, and they've been offering the service since 1999 and have a patent for their PC to Phone for e-commerce applications.

Greetings Extrasip and welcome to Voipuser
You wouldn't happen to work for eStara would you ?
If so are you interested in some discussion on developing and testing some code for Voipuser ?
