Hi all. I'm new to VOIP. Just set up the call1899 software but having problems.
I can connect to landlines OK and can hear the person at the other end clearly but the problem is my voice is very badly distorted at the landline end. Is there anything I can do about it?
Thanks |

Hi Nash and welcome to the forums.
Sounds to me like it could possibly just be an audio distortion issue?
Is your mic/headset definitely OK and levels set appropriately? Try recording something in MS Recorder to test.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have tested with Sound Recorder but that works fine. |

I'm getting the exact same problem. However, I also use Skype and that works fine. The distortion is so bad that it just sounds like some electronic sound! Any ideas anyone? |

If it's not your mic/sound levels, I would say it's digital distortion (really really terrible sounding?) in which case it's likely to be a codec issue.
Did you email 1899 about it?

I have found sometimes (but not always) I get quite a bad echo of myself with 1899 VoIP (Using a SIP hardphone via my asterisk box)
I have never had this echo when I use the VoIPUser service.
I will report it to them!
Currently my codec is set to allow=all for 1899
Shoukd this be limited to a particular one?
Ta! |

Hi Dean,
I have emailed 1899 and await their response (if any). what do u mean by "codec issue" and how can we resolve this?
Cheers,

maybe you selected in and end a codec that it is not supported in the other end.
Check all the codecs supported are aenable via web config on your device, and preferred codec is the same in both ends. |

I just tried using Firefly instead of 1899's own softphone and it works great now. |

Just a question for you Nashmills. Did you have to provide a credit card number to open a free account with 1899? |

I am a regular contributor to the site www.moneysavingexpert.com and am interested in the 1899 VOIP service.
I have had phone service with 1899's sister company (18866) for some months and calls from a UK landline to a UK landline are just 1p/call! And this is a PSTN service - not VOIP! NO charge to register, and no monthly rental. So, it is probably cheaper than using most VOIPs and more convenient!
Now, for UK landline to UK landline calls, 1899 charges 3p/call but some overseas destinations are also 3p/call! If you use the VOIP computer to landline service the 3p/call is waived and you pay only the per minute charge (but this 0p/min to UK and some overseas destinations). It is important to note that 1899 is for calls to LANDLINES, though, I suppose if you have an Internet phone number you can call that too.
1899 will not supply you with an Internet phone number - whats the point? If everyone used 1899 we could still all use our landlines for incoming calls - without having to switch on computer!
Now, I am not a technical boffin and would like to know what sort of Internet phone I could use with 1899 so I do not have to switch on computer to make calls. Any ideas? |
