Hi,

It's working now - they must have fixed something at their end.

What's interesting though is that the outgoing CLI is set to the number of your home phone....I didn't think they'd be able to set the outgoing CLI to a number they did not own?

What's important is that *you* own it.

How did they check?

Hi,

But that's my point - you can add more numbers on their web site. I added my mobile number on the site, setup asterisk to use that as the username and the voip call comes from my mobile number.

Unless the reason it says "updates can take up to 30 minutes" when you add a new number is because they can some how look up the details of who the number has been allocated to, I dont see what stops you registering any number on there.

Normally, all you could gain by adding someone else's number is they'd be able to make calls from their line which get charged to you...but obviously with voip it could be use to spoof the CLI....

I'm not going to try any other numbers though - dont want to get banned or something!

Interesting - that could get them into one hell of a lot of trouble.

The one element in all of this that I for one am uncertain about is basically giving ANY company that I deal with a 'blank cheque' to take as much money as they like from my account whenever they want.

I am not saying that the owners/operators of this site would mis use their power but there is 'potential for problem' as they say in some circles.

I would be happier pre paying £20 and taking a chance on losing it if they dissappear, than I would giving my CC details and allow open charging.

Since I would have thought that Pre Payment was easier to set up and had better cash flow implications it makes me even more concerned!

Yes, there is - which is obvious because I dont see how they could survive doing it completely for free.

But obviously if you're on the phone more than a few minutes, it's cheaper than using a landline.

Yeah, I see your point. Shurly you would be covered on a credit card if they just took a load of money you were not invoiced for??

You can sue the credit card company under UK law.

But it's very messy, and aggravation.

I'm also surprised it's not pre-pay.

Hi,

Looks like the beta has finished and they've "released" it.

I just got an e-mail:

Code:

You can now make the cheapest phone calls with your PC. Just download 1899Voip here
http://www.call1899.co.uk/voip.php . Plug in a headset and a microphone in your computer and you are set to
go

Nowhere else will you be able to find such fantastic Voip rates (and no connection fees!):

Germany 0p per minute!
Netherlands 0p per minute!
UK 0p per minute!
Remember; NO connection fees

Yes, zero pence per minute!

Kind Regards,

1899Voip
http://www.call1899.co.uk/voip.php

Interesting that they say no connection fees - when I tried it a month or so ago, even though the call charge was 0, you got charged the 3p per call like you do with the normal dial-thru service.

Will have to try it again and see what happens.

ok, I did a test call and it does seem to be completely free - so they seem to have scrapped the 3p connection charge on voip calls.

Dont know how they can afford to do that but it seems to work!

I have used 1899 for my landline calls for some time

I have a auto dailier thing which dials their 8080 number (as I'm on a telewest line) I have never had any problems, however they are a no frills operation so tech support is slow

However the service is very reliable overall
