Novaphon.com's web site and voip services are now down.
If gone, didn't last to much.

As was pointed out early on in the thread - run away.
Probability dictates that it won't last, and, worst case scenario, you'll lose your money.

Novaphone seems to be working fine despite romours of their demise (or cutting and running).
In answer to tanghetto earier -- it is an AIX service and not a SIP one. X-Lite is a SIP phone, so won't work (unless they have other server options they haven't mentioned). I downloaded the Idefisk client they mentioned and it seemed to work find for IAX.
Inanswer to jcgalvezv earlier -- thanks for pointing out the user=demo, pw=demo. It was in bold on the page so of course I missed it!
I still haven't been tempted with my credit card number -- I'd be happier if I had one of those credit cards that offer a unique number for a unique transaction.....

They say on the purchasing page the following:
Now you can talk for 0.02USD/min anywhere in the world using your favorite SIP/IAX2 client.
!!! confused now SIP and IAX or only IAX ???

I'm not sure. The client page (http://www.novaphon.com/client.html) looks as if it's only IAX, but as you say, the prices page (http://www.novaphon.com/prices.html) suggests both SIP/IAX.
(Of course, if you are willing to run Asterisk, you can use a SIP phone to make a call to an IAX only provider).
I might try them with SIP for interest if I get some time .... the weather is too nice out to try now!

Novaphon took my US$ 5 an disappeared. They have been two days down. No web site, no VoIP service and the worse thing, no reply to emails.
Good trick to say calls US$ 0.02 per minute anywhere to get money from trusting people like me and them disappear.

Yes Ian, I also noticed it. I finally made a 7 minutes call. Good quality.
Let see how long will my US$ 5 last.

For 2c/minute, I believe it will last you about 250 minute unless the company also charges for overhead. |

Well, I have talked for 72 minutes with my brother and sister in a a conference.
I used my AsteriskWin32 and Sipura 3000 to call my brother (using novaphon) and conferenced my sister (using callpacket account). Everything worked fine.
I used to spend US$ 10 monthly to call my brother. So US$ 5 per two months is not a bad deal. Well, if novaphon keeps running.

Has anybody tried calling any european mobiles with this service yet? I'm particularly interested in UK and Greece.
I'm guessing they will either not be allowed, have an extremely high failure rate, very bad quality or very high latency?
Does somebody care to try? |

Unlikely, as I suspect all the traffic is going through one gateway.
It may be simply blocked though. I'm also curious as to whether they allow it. That would be extremely expensive to maintain.

Why would using a single gateway guarantee any level of quality? Every VOIP provider I've ever used had bad quality to Greek mobiles, voipuser included btw
Anyway to get back on topic, I just did a search for "novaphon demo" on Google and one of the three results was this: http://www.openlogger.com/lines/213/5359-0.html
It's a log of an IRC channel used to trade stolen financial details. About half way down there is what seems to be an advert for Novaphon.
Somebody mentioned before that Romania + Credit Cards means trouble. Could this service exist in order to harvest peoples credit card details? |
