The future of the internet

An interesting and well-written article by the former prime minister of Sweden titled "Keep the internet free":-

He's referring to the meeting next month in Tunisia whereby the future of the internet as a global network could be threatened.

The real issue is the position of the US government in overseeing the internet's address structure (DNS).

It is currently managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), in California, under contract to the US department of commerce.

There was an official meeting in Geneva last month to attempt to find a way of sharing internet control. Proposals would then be unvieled, by politicians, at the UN World Summit in Tunisia (mid-November).

The EU, currently headed by Tony Blair, proposed a plan to meet the demands of developing countries in the governance of the internet. It got blocked. By the US.

The European IT commissioner, Viviane Reding, stated:-

Viviane Reding :
We have to have a platform where leaders of the world can express their thoughts about the internet. If they have the impression that the internet is dominated by one nation and it does not belong to all the nations then the result could be that the internet falls apart.

If a multinational approach cannot be agreed, countries such as China, Russia, Brazil and some Arab states might start their own versions of the internet, as sub-nets.

I do recommend you read the article in the link above. I think he's absolutely right (a rarity in technology for a former politician let alone PM!).

This is a really important issue for VoIP as well as the web and email and all other internet services. The integrity of the internet as a whole WAN is vital to it's continued operating success.

Nice article.

This is not where Europe should be on these issues.

Amen

If that entails leaving some ultimate safeguard powers in the hands of the United States, that's certainly better than having theocrats or autocrats around the world getting their hands on the levers of control.

Ditto... can you imagine the United Nations running the Internet or worse yet (Nightmare on Cyber Street) the Brussels Bureaucracy!!! Just thinking about it makes me feel ill.

Update following the event:-

Quote:
Negotiators from more than 100 countries agreed late Tuesday to leave the United States in charge of the Internet's addressing system, averting a U.S.-EU showdown at this week's U.N. technology summit.

U.S. officials said early Wednesday that instead of transferring management of the system to an international body such as the United Nations, an international forum would be created to address concerns. The forum, however, would have no binding authority.

And a nice summary on this from Richard:-
