Nokia launches E60 VOIP (SIP) Handset

Mobile Burn :
Nokia's E60 is a classically designed candybar handset that still offers the same basic functionality as its two more extravagant looking Eseries brethren, the E61 and E70. The E60 is a Series 60 3rd Edition device that runs on top of Symbian OS v9.1. The E60 was designed to provide a great voice experience both inside and out of the office, thanks to its triband GSM, WCDMA, and VOIP capabilities over WiFi.

The SIP based VOIP client allows the E60 to hook into compatible WiFi based PBX systems and act as a normal office extension, supporting all of the same features and dialing modes of a regular office phone - including 4 digit extension dialing. OMA DM compatibility means that IT managers can control where their company's data goes, and protect it from prying eyes. The over the air management capability let's IT managers do things such as wipe the data from the phone, or lock the phone all from a remote location.

What an Xmas present. This is just what I've been looking for. Great for SIP, and not a mention of Skype Evil or Very Mad

I have managed to get my hands on an E60 Prototype and Im sure that it will never work on voip, I am almost ready to give up. Maybe it is because it is a prototype and perhaps the voip side of it doesn't work but if you have any questions about it don't hesitate to ask

What are the problems you are running into? Has Nokia support made any statements?

The E60 doesn't seem to register on the voip network. It just says "requesting registration" and it logs onto the wireless network and faster than data it says "internet telephone sevice not available" as if it hasn't even tried. If you actually put a proxy address in the sip settings then it doesn't even log onto the wlan, it just returns "service not available" and then logs onto the wlan and does nothing, No manuals came with this prototype so it is difficult to say whether i have missed something or not. very puzzling.

Oops, I actually made that sound like I hadn't put any voip settings into the phone but I have tried every combination of settings you can possibly imagine: at present I have:
profile name: Sipgate (call it what you like I suspect cause its only a profile name)
sevice profile: IETF (only a choice between IETF and Nokia 3GGP)
Default access point: Flat (this one works on the nokia web browser and connects through my router)
Public Use Name: (tried most things but don't think it is required)
Registration: when needed (choice of when needed and always on, tried both)
use security: yes (chice between yes and no, tried both)

PROXY SERVER sub menu
proxy server address:217.10.79.219
realm:sipgate.co.uk
user name:1*****1 (sipgate username)
password:*******
allow loose routing: no idea... tried both yes and no
transport type:udp
port:5060

REGISTRAR SERVICE sub menu
same as Proxysettings

As you have a prototype, is there any way to get access to Nokia support and see if it is a bug in the pre-release?

The situation is, this phone was popped on my desk and I wask asked to test one of our products on it for compatibility, I did that, and now out of personal interest I would like to see if the voip side of it works well but I have no contact with Nokia and will have to return the phone (when my company ask for it) .

I was thinking of getting one when they are released but obviously only if the voip side works well but It is not looking too good at the moment. If I can't figure it out then I'm kinda stuck for people to ask!

Thanks in advance

Indeed, the only way I would buy is if SIP works. Period.

Is your Wi-Fi network behind a NAT-enabled firewall? Because if it is, SIP will not work, as far as I know.

I am in exactly the same situation as you. I received the beta e60 couple of months ago and have not been able to get it registered via sip. I have also tried every different setting on the sip side. Have you managed to get any info from Nokia??

Nope never did get it working, Nokia requested it back about a month ago so didn't get the chance to test it anymore. They said they would let us have a more complete version when the firmware was complete so I'm kinda hoping they mean the VOIP side of it wasn't complete yet (though they didnt say that) so If they send us another I will test on voip and post the results (I got my fingers crossed!) And yes my AP works a treat with the grandstream 486 and starcom f1000, they run perfectly so all NAT and sip ports are forwarded correctly.
