Hi,

I have asterisk setup etc but how do I configure the actual phone to talk to the Asterisk server? Is the asterisk server a TFTP daemon as well? Any help appreciated

You would have to setup your own tftpd seperatly (it can be on the same box as asterisk)

I presume you want to run the cisco phone in SIP mode, if so
http://www.wheely-bin.co.uk/cisco/
thats a guide i wrote a while back on the upgrade procedure

also see
http://www.wheely-bin.co.uk/asterisk/23/
for the sip.conf that i use for cisco phones (and a ata-186)

I'm also trying to get my new (from ebay) Cisco 7960 phone on my asterisk network, but I'm confused on what version of the software is on here currently.

When I go to Settings - Status - Firmware Version the Application Load ID is "POS3-07-2-00"

Does that mean I have the new 7.2 version and I don't need to upgrade anything? If that is the case how can I make it hook to my Asterisk server? I went through the manual config of the network and lines but I still can't make or recieve calls.

thanks.

"POS3-07-2-00" is the version 7.2 SIP image (The very latest is 7.3 or "P0S3-07-3-00")

You can setup the phone by 1 of 3 methods:

1/ on the phone. Use the "settings" key ("ticked box" on 79XXG), scroll to the very botom of the menu to unlock the config (default password is "cisco", enter via dialpad) then setup the phone as required via the menu.

2/ Via telnet. Really just an alternative to using the phone.

3/ via tftp. This requires a tftp server and a whole bunch of files but is by far the most powerful allowing extra ringtones, etc. Goto the Cisco site and get the 7960G Administration Guide for the details. This is the ONLY way to stay sane if you have a number of phones to provision.
