Skype SILK Codec to be Adopted As the Internet Standard ?

Written by dean on Mar 11, 2010 - 06:52 PM

Skype has open-sourced it's SILK codec (obtained through a $27m eBay stock paper transaction a couple of years ago).

This is part of the protocol of its earlier IETF submission for SILK to be a standard.

Jim Courtney has a good summary and the low down:-

I would be interested to know a little more about the actual specification of SILK to see how it compares with other Codecs in terms of 'packet payload' or Bandwidth usage. How processor intensive is it?

Does SILK give us 'HQ' sound if installed at both end points or is that another derivation ?

it will be interesting to see if third party clients such as nimbuzz and fring begin to support silk for skype calls.
