OpenSER was started by Bogdan, Daniel and Ramona after numerous code submissions and bug reports had been ignore by Iptelorg developers.

It's entirely based on SER, with a number of additions and improvements. It is hoped that the OpenSER branch will breath a little more life into an otherwise dead open-source project. SER has not been maintained for quite some time now, causing a little concern to us.

The official OpenSER website is at: http://openser.org

They also have a WiKi for documentation contributions at: http://openser.org/dokuwiki/doku.php

From the site:-

Quote:
OpenSER is a project spawned from FhG FOKUS SIP Express Router (SER). The reason for this new venture is the lack of progressing and contributions to the SER project from the other SER team members as well as the reticience to new contributions from project's community members. We want to accelerate the integration of public contributions to the SER project.

OpenSER promotes a new management policy (OPEN) -for new code acceptance and code-through propagation- and development approach -design and architecture. We have decided to bring more dynamics into SIP world by creating this new project that can benefit of TLS and so many other contributions. We welcome your contributions to the success of this project.

The project is managed by three of SER developers. You all like SER so we will do our best to maintain our exiting work and help the users of our solutions. We will therefore maintain close contacts with our former colleagues and SER project.

Daniel has been a member of VoIP User for some time. We'll actively support their project as (a) it's an open-source initiative, (b) we like what they've done with it and (c) for everyone using a SER based server, this kind of activity is critical to ensure continued confidence in the SIP protocol.

We, the core OpenSER team, want to say thanks to everyone that has sent us support messages about what we are trying to do for the SIP/SER community. A fork is not appreciated generally, and we cannot say that we like it, but a change was more than needed.

Changes usually bring about better conditions and a better environment and we want OpenSER to follow the same path. Note that the most important players are the community members, so you can contribute to, and benefit from OpenSER success.

Special thanks goes to VoIP User, one of the biggest free VoIP communities in the world, for hosting the forum for OpenSER and for supporting the project as much as possible.

Bogdan, Daniel and Ramona
