We're getting asked this quite a bit, so seems right to make a dedicated thread for it.
In essence, we think if you're providing no direct revenue to the pot, then anything more than one hour of outbound calls a week is probably unreasonable, and unfair on the contributing community.
One hour is plenty to run the odd test. As one of our moderators just said to me, if you need more than that and you're not providing anything inbound, go talk to Sipgate, Gossiptel etc
If you're providing inbound revenue to the pot, I would try and keep it on a one to one basis - each inbound minute = one outbound minute. Obviously if your inbound numbers are being used a lot, you're more than welcome to use the outbound service more.
There is a new member rating feature on your SIP control panel. That will also give you a bit of a guide. If you're in the negative, you're in defecit.

Hi dean,
I use my inbound number a lot so that people in france can call mpe on my 0844 or my 0703 number...i think this is great for the pot ( i mean long distance calls...) butr i don't really understand why it's written "10" on the panel...cause if one inbound minute corresponds at one outbound minute, the number written is incorrect..Or maybe i didn't understand what you were trying to explain earlier... if so, sorry and tell me more please...
i'm french, no body's perfect... |

There's nothing wrong with being a perfect 10
The 0703 numbers generate a lot more for the pot. At a guess, something like 15 minutes worth of outbound per minute inbound.
So that's probably the reason. The 1:1 element I talked about earlier was a broad average based on the 0844 range, which generate less income.
I wouldn't get your friends to call your 0703 number from the UK. Save those for the banks and sales callers |

Please dean, confirm that my ten allows me to make more than a 10mn outbound call...
Cheers. |

No, I think maybe we are at cross purposes. The 10 minute call cap is global.
The rating of "10" you see in the control panel (I assume that's the 10 you were referring to in your last post?) relates to your VoIP User rating (see the top threads of this forum for more info).

We're starting to make up ground on that defecit, but only slowly.
Everything has run far more smoothly since we put on the 10 minute cap, so we decided to leave it as it was. Remember, VoIP User is really more geared to introducing people to the concept of VoIP and actually letting them play with it (experiement with new hardware, setup asterisk, SIPxPBX etc) - we are not a VoIP service provider.
No-one should really need more than 10 mins per call to experiement.
Having said that, we're prepared to take a view on it and put the limit up to enable people to use the service more, but only when inbound revenue = outbound revenue on that increased basis. At the moment, it probably wouldn't, but at 10 mins max call length, it does.

Hi Dean,
if a user contributes to "the pot" via paypal rather than incoming calls ,does this get reflected in the member status list ?
Regards

Hi BB, not quite sure what you mean? What member status list?
If you mean is it reflected in your account rating then the answer is yes it is.

Is there any way we can see what our incoming and outgoing minutes are?
I tried to generate some incoming calls but my rating is showing as -8. I assume that this is because I made some calls several months. Also I assume that this is why I get a "403 Local calls only" error when I try to make a call now. It would be nice to know how much I need to make up before I can do some tests. Or have I just stuffed up the configuration |

Hello,
How does calling 0800 numbers affect my usage quota of outgoing minutes?
Many companies only list 0800 numbers for their customer service, and these can't be called from abroad - which was my original reason for looking at VOIPuser. |

0800's are free - they don't cost us anything.
Dial away at them merrily!

Hi langtu and welcome to VoIP User.
Both those questions are answered in the FAQ forum...

I saw the question asked but no reply.
I am willing to make regular contributions via paypal once I get my system up and running, which I haven't done yet. However, I have very few people who would call me using the uK numbers, while I would use the outbound to call.
I doubt I would need much more than 10min/call, but at the same time, I should be fair to contribute back to this community which I respect for such an amazing idea.
SO, after my long winded introduction, short version of question is as asked before, will my paypal contribution be reflected in my allowed outbound calls?
