Alright, so a client of mine went out and bought an NEC DSX-40 package without consulting with me. Big surprise. System comes with a KSU and 3 handsets. Here's a quick link:

I can't for the life of me figure out what this thing is exactly. I know that's vague, but it seems kinda like a regular POTS/PBX keyed system. You can punch down analog lines and run them into it (through an ethernet port, so 4 lines per port of 8 pins) and then out to the extension numbers, similar to the incoming setup. The really confusing part is it does have a LAN port and as far as I can tell you CAN use IP Handsets (the supplied handsets are 2 pin digital) with it, but it doesn't seem to be an IP PBX in the sense that I can't purchase a SIP trunk and connect it over the internet to this device as you would with an Asterisk box. It seems the only VoIP thing about this device is that you can use VoIP internally on the network. To connect to a VoIP service I would have to have the VoIP provider lines converted into analog lines through the services proprietary box, then punched down into this device and converted back to digital, which seems a bit redundant and silly.
For anyone that has experience with NEC DSX type devices, my question is what service type is necessary to get this thing up and running?
