Google Voice causing Privacy Concern

Written by dean on Oct 22, 2009 - 12:16 PM

According to the Telegraph Google Voice messages were appearing in search results pages:-

Quote:
Web users had noticed that some voice recordings and transcripts of conversations were showing up in Google search results. One poster on Google's support forum said the blunder appeared to be "a serious breach of privacy which is alarming at best".

Apparently they've now fixed it:-

However, Google said it had modified the service to prevent messages and transcripts shared online showing up in the course of general searches. Google Voice – which pulls together multiple phone numbers from office, home and mobile in to a signal, universal number, owned for life and managed through the web – also provides transcripts of voicemails, and an archive of all text messages sent and received.

Reading between the lines I'm sure there's a case of user error here - to be crawled, messages must have been posted up by users on public webspace? So I'm not entirely sure this was Googles fault, even though they have conceded the point and prevented their crawlers from indexing Google Voice content.
