Two Really Interesting Projects in Telecoms
Written by dean on Oct 11, 2009 - 03:59 PM
It's been a good week in my opinion - two really interesting VoIP oriented projects, one launched officially and one I just discovered.
First off,
CloudVox launched.
Run by a small team of enthusiasts CloudVox is an API designed to simplify the incorporation of voice services into applications. There are alternatives of course (Voxeo and the like) but what I like about CloudVox is that they're small and nimble and a group of developers that have a vision to make things better rather than taking a corporate approach. To my knowledge, they have not had any funding and are fully boot-strapped. An impressive achievement.
I first had contact with the CloudVox team a year or so ago (and I was an early BETA user). Their objective is to make telecoms application development as quick and easy as possible. Given it's a small team I'm sure they'll have some teething issues in the early days but I have no doubt their passion will see them through that.
The second thing I came across this week is a PHP based SIP stack created by
Level 7 Systems
Being PHP based this could really open up telephony applications for web developers. It's open-source and available from their Google Code repository
here
It's a limited stack and not yet fully featured, but it does allow SIP to SIP click to call style functionality. They have a blog post detailing how to do that with the new stack
here
I think both of these projects are a great thing. They both seek to enable Joe Developer to create voice-oriented applications. We need more of that to really drive this industry forwards.

Hi VoIPworld,
It's a protocol stack only. No audio. This is not for embedded audio applications like phones in browsers, this is for signalling only.
PHP is a server-side scripting language.
