I'm considering abandoning broadband via BT's copper because service out here is so poor and switching to (fixed location)wireless. But I would like to retain a local number DID. Some operators (O2 and Virgin for example) expressly forbid VOIP, some expressly allow it. Some avoid mentioning it (Orange) and I don't trust answers from CS!

I've experimented with short term PAYG but with inconclusive answers and don't want to commit to a long term contract on such flimsy evidence. Does anyone have hard knowledge or better still actual experience? Particularly on Vodafone contracts, T-mobile 30£, 5GB contract and Orange contracts. I'm not interested in 3. Although an excellent signal speed is unbelievably slow.

Would tbe best solution not be to use both?

Stick with a traditional phone line for your DID (and emergency calling) but revert to it being just a phone line. (No ADSL)

Experiment with wireless internet until you find a network that fits your needs. If you manage to do that you can always interconnect your PSTN land line to VOIP using an ATA.

Although number portability is theoretically easy there are often delays and problems with setting it up. Retaining the PSTN line gives you more flexibility and 'belt and braces' if Wireless DSL is down for any reason and you want to remain contactable.

Hi

Voip over 3G is (unless the mast is on your roof) a nonstarter.
The jitter and latency makes its impossible to hold a conversation.

I have seen latency of up to 3 seconds ! in towns.

Try it by all means but dont be surprised if the quality is really poor and the call drops when handing over between cells

Ian
