iNum Gets High-Def Audio

Written by martyndavies on Sep 16, 2009 - 12:07 PM

At the HD Communications Summit in New York, Voxbone have announced HD audio support for their iNum service. iNum is the +883 "world code" service that allows free or very low-cost calling between any geographic, VoIP or mobile services that support the 883 country code.

With HD audio (in the case of Voxbone meaning using the G.722 wideband codec), a high quality audio call can be made end-to-end without the call being limited to the 4kHz (G.711) bandwidth of a regular phone call. Such services are seeing increasing demand in the VoIP world (such as Skype); enterprise communications systems (like Microsoft OCS); and also with technologies like TFO/TrFO that can enable high quality audio for mobile and legacy networks.

Voxbone CEO Rod Ullens sees HD audio as improving the call experience for those that take part in international and multicultural conference calls:
Quote:

"The clarity of high definition tremendously helps callers using their second or third languages or listening to non-native speakers. In-the-room voice quality frequently has been noted for alleviating "ear strain" and improving attentiveness on long conference calls.
