Hi all,
I asked my parents to phone my incoming number yesterday, the phone rang and I answered but there was silence. I'm using SiPhon (SIP Phone) on an iPhone. I just asked our IT guy and we're behind a NAT Firewall, is that a problem, I don't really know NAT is?
Otherwise any suggestions to troubleshoot? Cheers. |

Hi and thanks. I'm currently testing with my VoIP user account so I put in the stun server setting from the "My SIP Account" section.
I tried calling the echo test by entering:
00 44 844 986 3246 (I'm calling from Germany).
Then I read you shouldn't use the international prefix for echo so I tried:
0844 986 3246.
Its still dead. My settings are:
Username: Myname
Password: Mypassword
Server: sip.voipuser.org
ADVANCED SETTINGS
Reg. Timeout: 1800
Proxy server: (blank)
Enable NAT off
Auth Username (blank)
Contact: (blank)
PHONE SETTINGS
Echo canceller: off
Silence detector: off
Codec: G711 ulaw; G711 alaw; GSM
Send DTMF with INFO: off
NETWORK SETTINGS
Siphon over Edge: off
Local port: 5000
STUN server: stun.voipuser.org
STUN domain: (blank)
Keep alive interval: 15
MEDIA TRANSPORT OPTIONS
RTP Port: 4000
Enable ICE: off
Phew. Skype was never this complicated to set up. |

It looks like there may be something wrong wrong with number translation at Voipuser at present. I cannot call 08449863246 to get the echotest but I can call echotest [!at] sip.voipuser.org (replace the [!at] with a @). I haven't attempted to find out why yet.
You also should be able to call using the SIP address(es) rather than the numbers. If we were to put our service into a rigid ("do it our way") box then Voipuser could be much easier to use. However, Voipuser gives you a free hand with the way that you do things. |

Just a quick reply, I've been busy. I bought some credit with LocalPhone, it was so cheap. Outgoing calls work great, I have a local incoming London number which is forwarded to SiPhon on the iPhone but again silence when my phone rings.
I've emailed LocalPhone my SiPhon specs for support but having the same result with two providers seems to be a problem at this end. Incidentally, there's a bug in SiPhon and it can't enter @ symbols. |

Yes, it looks like you have a port problem. Get the free version of X-Lite from Counterpath and give that a try. Although I normally use Linux (There is an X-Lite for Linux if you want to try it or Twinkle is a good alternative)), I do have a copy of MS Vista on a laptop and X-Lite functions on there (I checked it yesterday). Try it first with STUN (stun.voipuser.org) and if it fails try configuring it with forwarded ports from your router (eg 5060 UDP and 8000 - 8010 UDP). X-Lite allows you to enter SIP addresses. |

Hi, good news, I received my first incoming call using my LocalPhone DID forwarded to my VoIP number, that was very rewarding. It worked first time using X-Lite.
But now I'm confused, why do incoming calls work behind our company firewall with X Lite but fail behind the same firewall with WiFi on the iPhone?
Any suggestions for any tests I could try? Incidentally, I figured I can SkypeOut to my London DID and test as much as necessary without getting people to call me any more |

Sorry, I should have added that LocalPhone support, who have been very good by the way, asked me to test using X-Lite and emailed me the basic settings. I just did a further test using LocalPhone's own software on the PC and to my surprise it didn't work?
So it seems its nothing to do with WiFi but there's something about X-Lite that works that doesn't work with the other SIP clients I tried? |

I have also found that the Linux Version of X-Lite works in circumstances where other clients fail. I usually recommend it to new users for that reason. X-Lite have been around for quite a long time and is quite advanced and mature software.
Glad to hear that voip is working for you now. Enjoy! |

When that happens it is usually connected with ports or with misconfiguration of the sound system. Check which sound devices are in use. Sometimes it is best to reboot before using a SIP client if you have been using sound on the computer with say an audio player or video game. |
