Howlertech Bring New Software Low Bitrate Codec

Written by martyndavies on Jul 07, 2009 - 03:48 PM

Howler Technologies have introduced “Howlets”, or optimized audio codecs for VoIP applications. Howlets are software plugins for soft-switches, offering G.729a compression at a lower cost than competitive products, and they claim higher density and quality than existing solutions.

Peter Briffett, Howlertech :
Our initial product works with Freeswitch and Asterisk, and allows up to 500 channels on a quad-core. It’s the first G.729 low bit-rate coder available to Freeswitch users.

Pricing starts at £3.99 per channel, and there are a number of different licensing options, including a ‘floating’ license that allows you to spread a license pool across servers, as long as the instantaneous total number of concurrent calls remains within the licensed limit.

Howler recently announced Caraya, a media processing offload technology based on the IBM Cell processor.
