Anyone have any thoughts on these PCI GSM gateways?

Do you think they would provide better call quality than an external GSM gateway? Better scalability? They start from about AU$800 which isn't much more that buying an FXO card for the Asterisk box and a cheap external GSM gateway.

Do you think there will be an issue with being A ticked or not (for Australian use) ?

Anyone ever played with these?

Hi

I would look at sip connected GSM gateways, The cards do suffer from having to install drivers etc. Using sip gateways let you mount the unit close to where you are going to site the aerial as long aerial leads will affect signal strength.

Thanks for your reply Ian. Do you think there would be any difference in call quality or functionality between a standalone unit and the PCI card?

From what I've seen it would be cheaper and more scalable to use the PCI cards instead of buying more standalone unit as usage grows. I will end up needing to have about 10 sim cards in use within the next 12 months.

Also, if the PCI card manuafacturers say that the card works with asterisks then the divers shouldn't be an issue should they?

Hi

If you want to scale then cards aren the way to go. Gateways scale to a much greater degree, If you think you are going to scale then get a chassis based system. These will scale upto 30+ sims

You would have thought so !

But using gateways lets you use redundancy failover and make a much more resilent system.

Aren't these chassis systems just a motherboard with a bunch of PCI slots and GSM cards?

If I use the PCI cards I can just buy more cards slowly as I need to instead of buying one big stand alone unit up front. The below product seem to be able to be assembled in its own external PCM Bus (I am guessing this is like its own chassis?)

That's certainly true ... until you run out of PCI slots in the computer Smile
