Hi all,

Here is the scenario. I have an account with Vonage and another with GalaxyVoice. My ISP blocks Voip so I use a VPN service to connect my routers to. My ATAs are then connected to the router. I have two types of VPN connections, one a SSl based VPN and the other a L2TP based VPN. The Vonage adapter works well when connected through either type of VPN. My GalaxyVoice adapter works well when I connect through the L2TP VPN, but I don't have audio in either direction on inbound calls, when connected through the SSL based VPN. My tests have detemined that the problem with some incompatibility for the GalaxyVoice ATA when connected through the SSL VPN, since the Vonage ATA works well through the same SSL VPN. The vonage adapter is a PAP2 and GalaxyVoice adapter is PAP2T-NA. Any ideas what would ne causing this? In other words, why would it work with a L2TP tunnel and only work one way when using the SSL tunnel?

Sounds like a NAT issue to me - the SSL tunnel is probably simulating a LAN environment with a NAT type model.

What configuration options do you have over the SSL tunnel ?

BTW - as an aside, bear in mind that the tunneling will be over TCP/IP, so you have that additional overhead, which will give you a minimum latency of about 500ms in my experience (which is fine as long as there is no other latency introduced).

Thanks for the response. Could be a NAT issue, but why does the Vonage adapter work through the same SSL tunnel?

The latency is not noticable. I have full control over the SSL tunnel, because I built that network. I therfore can make any changes required. Other suggestion?

I was using Wireshark to try to see difference when using either tunneling method, but I am no expert here.

That would be the case if Vonage have a slightly more advanced NAT traversal system than others (quite likely). EG they're fixing the problem on the fly.

I don't think it's a problem at your end. Interesting that you have what sounds like an efficient tunnel system running though. What is it based on?

I would look at the SIP headers and see if you can spot NAT style address ranges (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.... etc).

It is based on OpenVPN and it works great. I've been using Vonage through it for some years now, but I wanted to start using another provider, mainly because Vonage is becoming too expensive especially with the recent increase in access fees.

Will continue using Wireshark to look for differences. Thanks.

I have the one-way audio issue with one termination call, I can hear them, they cannot hear me.

I was told to enable some NAT settings on my Linksys 2102.

Anyway I am using voip.ms a much cheaper alternative to Vonage.

Probably the best VOIP out there is Callcentric. Not as cheap as voip.ms but definitely cheaper than Vonage.

I don't think it is a configuation issue, because of reason in my fist post.

How do you post the config?

Just go to the web setup pages for the 2102 in Firefox browser and then click on File and then "Save Page as" to save the entire configuration. Edit anything you don't want out from the HTML and then post the file.

Usually the best way is to place it on your web page (not zipped so that it can be read directly) or use one of the free posting sites and post the link here (then it does not take up much forum space).

Maybe the site administrators can add functionality to the forum with a button to be able to attach files as I see on other forums.
