At
Google I/O in San Francisco today, Google announced there would be a new Android Developer Challenge starting this year.
The first developer challenge gave a helping hand to startups making new apps for the Android platform, many of which, like
Cooking Capsules and
Synchrospot, are now commercially available for handsets like the T-Mobile G1.
This year's challenge will kick-off in August, and will offer prizes of $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively. There are 10 different application categories, and each of the categories will have a first, second and third prize. The categories are:
* Education/Reference
* Games: Casual/Puzzle
* Games: Arcade/Action
* Social Networking
* Lifestyle
* Productivity/Tools
* Media
* Entertainment
* Travel
* Misc
The platform target will be Android 1.5. Time to brush-up those Java skills.
