i will have a bit more of a play, in the meantime i have another question for you.....

in the long run, as im going to use this number for business do you think i will better going for voipfone? ive been having a look at the website and they seem alot more proffesional, sipgate is very appealing with everything being free but im starting to wonder if i would be better paying the £2.20 a month if the servive etc is better.

what do you think?

If you plan is to use a Voip number for business then remember that it may be best if you own and control the number. If you own a DID from a full DID provider you can change your voip provider easily without having to deal with porting/ownership of the number. You should also think about the need to have a back up/emergency system (this might be a regular BT wired phone). In my experience Voip is reliable but I would always have some kind back up. As for provider, we try to avoid recommending any particular ones - there are lots to choose from in the UK (I am in Canada).

thats fair enough.

am i correct in saying voiphone is per second billing and sipgate is per minute?

also with voipfone you do own the number dont you?

is it likely to be any easier setting up voipfone on my pc then it is sipgate?

thank you for all the advice so far, its much appreciated!

Most voip providers charge per second. Voipfone say on their web pages "calls are calculated to a fraction of a second with a minimum charge of 1p". The only voip provider that I use that charges per second is MyWebcalls and does no have a minimum charge. I tend to make rather short calls so the min. charge and per min charging can make quite a difference. You would have to check with Voipfone on ownership. Gradwell provide DIDs and voip service in the UK . There must be many others.
I am not sure why SipGate was giving you problems as it seems to work OK on my X-Lite (Linux) and my ATA. You may prefer to get the DID from one company and the voip service from another so you need to check that carefully before buying.
