Guys,

Got some problems with my VoIP provider, ping tests suggest it's in their network. But whatya know, they tell me it's me, because no-one else has reported a fault. It's not major, but a few times a day my line goes dead for a second or two. No live calls drop, I just can't hear anything and niether can the other person. It's really bugging me, insanely so for how rarely it happens.

Are the any testing tools that "pretend"/simulate a call, but allow you to do diagnistics with them? I've seen a few things like the hardware solution from packetisland, but I'm just after something I can run on my machine (OS is Linux). Seems there's loads of SIP dev tools in Linux, so I could make my own client with full test functionality, but I ain't no programmer!

Any help much appreciated.

Welcome to Voipuser forums.

Is it the internet that seems to go down or your voip? It is not clear from your question. If ping fails (and it normally works) then I suppose the internet is going down and you need to look at the settings on your router. The routers from some ISPs are set to a specific connect time and you will need to increase this as high as you can. If it is really only the voip that is affected then the answer may be similar but affecting the ATA if you have one. What router are you using and how are you connecting your Voip?

Internet is clean right up to my VoIP providers server (every hop).

When I loose ping to the server, my phone "blips". On the router/device before hand it's 100% all the time.

They're telling me the packet loss is normal as it's their QoS on the router before hand discarding non-essential VoIP traffic. "It must be my end." I know it isn't, as for example any other data on that line isn't effected.

So I kinda want to use a test/voip simulator that has some diagnostics to prove it isn't my end. Basically a RTP ping? If such a beast exists =P

EDIT - Just to add, it's my labtop, and it happens wifi at work as well.

What modem/router are you using? ... and just out of curiosity ... what version of Linux. And what voip are you using?

There are a number of Voip testing programs.

Fedora is my O/S, router is a ZyXel at home, can't remember the model number. Work there's wireless, over a Cisco. VoIP is via a SIP softphone - Twinkle.

Well twinkle is a good and reliable linux sip client that I sometimes use myself without problems. I think the first place to look may be the ZyXel router. Get hold of the router manual and check your current settings carefully. In particular the expire time.
