Howler Technologies recently came out of 'stealth mode', and announced a new product called Caraya, a high-performance packet processor based on the IBM Cell (as used in the PS3).
The current application for Caraya is as a performance booster for Asterisk and Freeswitch engines, adding offload for processing compressed voice codecs like AMR and G.729. Dan Lane (Howlertech founder and
MIR Show host) tells me that the architecture is much more flexible than DSP solutions, and they have lots of technology surprises on the Caraya roadmap.
Dan Lane himself has decided to leave the company: You can read about this
in his own words here, but to summarize: he enjoyed the startup phase of the company, but having reached 'steady state' operation Dan finds himself desiring a new challenge. He is still a major shareholder in the company and remains involved, although not on a day-to-day basis.
