The
Symbian Foundation today announced the registration system for developers that want access to the Symbian "open source" code.
Access to the code requires an annual fee of $1500 (+15% VAT), and signed contracts for membership, and for code contributors there is a separate contribution agreement. Applications from individuals are unwelcome; Symbian want the relationship to be with an incorporated company, and in fact where there is a parent company the relationship must be at the very top.
In contrast, access to Android code is a much more relaxed affair, with the code published
via a Google site.
Fragmentation in mobile phone operating systems is at a high water mark at the moment: in addition to Symbian and Android, developers may also have to face up to Apple, Blackberry, BREW, Mobile Linux, Windows Mobile, and now also palm experimenting with yet another operating system,
palm web OS.
