My boss came to me with the usually smart idea and has asked me to figure out how to do it and of course I am like "What?"....Why can't I have a normal IT position.

Here is the problem.

This business has many numbers currently on voip except a handful that are straight from the telco. I am supposed to find out a way to get four dedicated lines to continue to come in the building and voip it over vpn to a satellite office.

I understand that voip can receive one number and distribute it but can it receive 4 lines and at say 6pm switch them all to one phone over a vpn to a satellite office. I think each line will include the monthly connection charge from AT&T but I want to know if its possible or has anyone ever heard of this.

lots of ways to get the lines there. time of day requirement means you'll need an ip-pbx.freeswith or asterisk would suit your needs. use a gateway ( like audio codes or a tdm card like sangoma)to push it to your pbx for dial logic.

This is very possible and fairly easy to do using an asterisk type system. At my old job, we installed Trixbox systems and they seemed to work really well. I know that we had two businesses and four phone numbers going into the system. At closing time (6pm here) one number is directed to a cell phone (or anywhere else it needs to go at the moment) and the rest are directed to the after hours voicemail.

Check out Trixbox. It has a great GUI as I don't know if asterisk does.
