MaxRoam V2 has kicked off the year with a great start by enabling smart travel company Dopplr to set up an MVNO for travel SIMS:-

Quote:
Speaking about the partnership, Cubic Telecom’s CEO Pat Phelan stated “We’re delighted to be working with Dopplr. MaxRoam’s SIM card will enable Dopplr travelers to save a minimum of 70% on their mobile travel bills.”

Within nine months of its launch in September 2007, MaxRoam had saved travelers more than $1 million on their roaming mobile bill and almost $1.7 million to date. These savings will now be extended to Dopplr members with a Dopplr SIM and website to manage their mobile usage while traveling.

The MaxRoam platform is a white label service which lets anyone set up a SIM based MVNO service. You can apply here for info:-

I personally find this very exciting. Why? Well, if you take a look at the most succesful MVNO ever, Virgin Mobile (enabled by Vodafone), you see what can be done with a powerful brand. The problem with such deals is that MVNO arrangements frequently take months of negotiation and cost several hundreds of thousands of pounds to implement. What Pat Phelan has done is to take the whole process to the street and make MaxRoam an MVNE for the ordinary man. You don't have to be Richard Branson any more to launch a service.

I can see all kinds of value here, not just for brands wanting to launch a SIM service for an additional revenue stream, but also for corporates/SME's who want to have a service for travelling employees.

What I personally think Pat has which will make this a success is his historical background in calling cards. This gives him a unique understanding and insight into the entire supply chain from vendor to end user. Calling cards are now officially dead - making low cost international calls from a mobile handset is a far better user-experience. And now international calling costs with MaxRoam are down to nearly calling card level.

So, in my opinion, MaxRoam just replaced the branded calling card service (a big business). Why bother when you can sell a SIM card instead and effectively offer the same service, only mobile?

For these reasons I think MaxRoam will be a huge play in 2009.
