Skype Coming to the iPhone

Written by dean on Jan 12, 2009 - 05:00 PM

Skype have confirmed that they are working on a version of Skype for iPhone as well as Google Android phones:-

Quote:
Skype, a web-based communications service, announced on Thursday that an iteration of its internet-messaging and internet calling software will be available for Google’s Android powered handset as a free download.

In addition, this eBay subsidiary also indicated that the iPhone version of the software is also there on the cards.

Skype’s iPhone application is under development and engineers are pooling huge efforts in trimming down the amount of power the application requires, Skype’s chief operating officer, Scott Durschlag noted.

Of course if you have to have Skype on your iPhone now, you can do courtesy of mobile VoIP client Fring

However, a native Skype client is likely to boost usage considerably and would certainly put Skype in poll position as the Worlds leading mobile VoIP operator.

Skype already have a dedicated mobile handset through its partnership with UK mobile provider 3 (these are brilliant by the way - I have two of them).

Although Skype are known as a VoIP operator, the 3 Skype Phone actually works over the traditional GSM network and I wonder whether the iPhone client will work in the same way. That would mean it is not restricted to WiFi range, which is a major consumer roadblock to alternative mobile services.
