BT To Route 0870 Numbers For Free
Written by dean on Jan 08, 2009 - 07:27 PM
In a bold move, BT have decided to route calls to 0870 numbers free of charge to BT Anytime customers.
This obviously has significant benefits to VoIP User as the bulk of our calls to 0870 ranges are BT customers.
We're currently out of our 0870 number ranges, but we're fixing that now and will report when done.

An Anytime customer will now get their calls to these numbers for free – as well as all their calls to UK landlines and great rates on mobile calls – for just £4.85 a month, which works out at less than the cost of a second class stamp a day.
A customer who is on the Evening and Weekend package will get their 0870 and 0845 calls for free, as well as their UK landline calls, after 6pm every day and all weekend. |

I wonder if this has any impact on those 0870 numbers you offer?
As you need to get income from those numbers, but if a BT customer is not paying anything...? In what way Voipuser gains a part of income?

There is a subtle difference The users are paying, as they have an inclusive package, BT have decided to include these numbers in those packages.

Hi,
That seems strange, so what if I buy a 0870 number and I manage to generate more revenues from it than what my BT anytime costs me (£4.85 flat fee....)?

You will generate a credit for it, but you won't get paid for it (the operators have systems in place to stop that kind of arbitrage).

BT now have more info on their rates page

Will Voipusers numbers get classified as an "indirect access number"?
Looking at the rate tables and the "plans" does anyone actually know what they are paying for a call at anytime?

I believe so. Indirect access number simply means it's not a direct-dial, but a passthrough.
We pass them through to a VoIP endpoint (or another PSTN number).
I'll check into that, though.

Having sat in on many of BT's product meetings, you can be sure there is a profitable or perceived profitable driver somewhere. Either that, or someone has finally woken up to the fact that calls and line rental are the main source of free cash flow for the company and they're trying to buy back share.
Dunno, time will tell.
