Google Android Goes Open Source

The Google Android source code has gone open source, and is now available on their site http://source.android.com/. Google had earlier promised that the entire source code would be published once the first handsets had started to ship, and now that the first handset has launched, the “T-Mobile G1 with Google”, that promise has come good. The sourcecode itself is 2.1Gb, and developers need Ubuntu Linux or Mac OS in order to build the operating system for themselves.
On the Android blog Dave Bort stressed that the components could be used more flexibly than simply in a mobile handset:
It’s good to see Android keeping up the momentum in this way, and it will be interesting to see if there is any immediate response from the Symbian Foundation, who are at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London this week. Symbian recently announced that they were being turned into an open-source platform themselves by owners Nokia handing ownership to a vendor-independent foundation.
Note that this release is for the Android operating system itself. Developers with the more limited aims of writing user apps for Android handsets can still find the necessary source and tools at http://code.google.com/android/.
