Hi,
I am thinking about switching from a conventional phone provider over to a VoIP one, but am having problems trying to locate a local provider. I live near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. What I want is a local number, along with the ability to pay for whatever minutes I use a month. Where could I find a provider like this? |
There do not seem to be many DID providers in Atlantic Canada although they do seem to be available now in some major cities. I (in St. John's NL) have kept my PSTN phone and have ADSL (Aliant) high speed. I only use PSTN for local calls and everything else goes using voip (mostly to the UK), I have a Linksys SPA3102 ATA box for Voip and PSTN management. Long distance calls by voip cost about 1 to 2 cent/min. I would probably drop the PSTN line if a DID was available at a reasonable price (I have a cell phone for emergencies). Exactly what services you choose depends on your phone habits .. mostly US and Canada or International - Europe or elsewhere. If you make calls to other voip users then the call will probably be free.
You give voip a try using your computer first. The Counterpath X-Lite client softphone or Zoiper softphone is a good start.
