I'm hoping to tap on the knowledge of other folks here with respect to a recommendation for a VOIP service provider appropriate to my needs. I've been doing research and may have found some options, but think those more familiar with the landscape will likely have better ideas.

I'd like to port an existing USA number (currently hosted by Vonage) to a system that provides voice mail that will forward messages by email. I don't need the system to provide any calling functionality.... I essentially want to park a number somewhere with voice mail.

I'd also like to do this on the cheap.

Any recommendations of providers I should consider?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Voipuser forums.

I looks like a good place for you to start would be with Voxalot.com . It can do what you want and you can probably do it for no charge for the basic features. You can use the phone to get your voicemail and it is also emailed to you.

I don't see how I can port a number to Voxalot, can you elaborate?

To be clear, the number I want to keep is now hosted by Vonage. I want to discontinue using Vonage, but want to keep the number so I'm looking for a provider to which I can port the number.

Thanks.

I thought that you might be looking for that. I know little about porting (I cant even get an inexpensive DID here in Newfoundland). I think Callcentric may be able to help you.

as a general rule a voicemail only provider will be more expensive than a full service provider that hopes to have more ways to make money off you than the single monthly fee. i do not have a specific recommendation but i would look for a service provider that includes voicemail in a basic plan but charges by the minutes instead of having unlimited calling. you may also want to consider porting your number to a prepaid cell phone plan(all major carriers allow this i believe). than you would just have to pay the minimum amount to keep your phone active and have the credit for calling as a bonus.
