There's nothing wrong with wanting an iPhone Ian Wink

You'll love it - honestly. It's a really nice thing.

My problems with version 1 were that it was a crap phone and had bad battery life. They've fixed the crap phone and apparently now it's very good. Battery life is still not great.

You have a cupboard full of spare phones anyway right?

Go for it...

Also looking at the idea but not yet got the info on whether it will run any third party VOIP app that I want to experiment with. The other clincher would be whether the data package was reasonable value, they seem to have developed specific ones for this phone and some look like a rip off.

Can't help thinking that when the dust settles there may well be a number of 'me too' products and packages in the pipeline that may be better?

I think all the hype was spent on the version 1 Launch and this one whilst being better is not going to grab the volume of the first model since not many are going to buy sim free again just to trade up + the mobile operators seem to be targeting new clients.

I thnk what peeves me most is that Apple only offer it to one operator per country for bundling and the sim free price is way too high (given this model has lower component count and is supposed to be cheaper to manufacture).

Depends on what you want it for. As long as you are not looking to develop for it, and you dont mind a keypad or a handful of restrictions, its not that bad at all. Its good on 02 for the data plan alone! My experiences trying to develop for it though, have really turned me sour on Apple. Seems that others are saying the same thing in the developer space.. some notable characters too..

I've just ordered one of these instead.

Bit late:

Always find I have to ask "Why would I want one?" with Apple.

I admit they always look pretty, but I've never been in to style over practicality and there are always ways of doing things better and/or cheaper without the cloud of a closed system that makes Microsoft look like THE leader in Open Source. MS certainly haven't gone as far as bricking a PC if it has somebodyelses software loaded

Some things they get right. I love my Macbook - absolutely functional and a beautiful OS. I'm more productive on it than I was on my old Sony/HP/Dell laptops with Windows.

Agree on the closed system though. That comes from Apple being extremely protective of their brand and user-interface. Very difficult to have both closed (ish) system and open platform.

They got it wrong, but that was the case also with the original Macs. I would say by about version 4 of iPhone it will be a very compelling device with all the serious bugs ironed out.

Well 1 day in and yes, I sort of like the UI, one issue, I lost the tip of my index finger to frostbite many years ago and due to the way the screen works I have to use my second finger, But thats my fault not theirs. As Pat said the APPS store is nice , got VNC and also Google apps.

Oh and I have always loved googlemaps on mobiles anyway and that works really well on the iphone

So far so good.

I did in the past look at the "openphone" and have used OpenMoko. but it was just so featureless and ran so slow on a 400Mhz pda phone I had to switch back to WM6 then

Well I've had mine for 10 days now and I would say it is a pretty good phone, two points I noticed (they are minor) phone does not like to switch bettween VPN and no VPN to pick up mail (needs to be restarted).
second point it does seem to stick a bit sometimes (Time Lag) but this seems to disapear.
Lets face it it's a full copy of OS X on a phone so the future has got to be good.
Battery life is about one day if you like to surf the web etc, otherwise it is not bad.
Plus points, welll where do I start, brilliant mobile browser, it's certainly THE BEST Mobile browser out there, that combined with the multi touch interface makes it work really well.
Google maps app is great GPS works well with this, I would say it was 10 times better than google maps on a desktop because it is so much more functional.
APPS Store is just started, this is the killer feature in many ways, the phone is a reall copy of OS X so it will in theory run most things which are fairly easily translated. APPS Store will definately push the iPhone design in the future.
Visual voicemail is a nice touch.
Contacts very easy to navigate.
all in all well woth it.
As for the tarruf it is Unlimited data so that has got to be woth a packet in it's self...

I will ONLY get iPhone when there is a company out there that will send it for free (like LaFonera). Chances are there will be no such a company. As such, I will never get an iPhone. Very Happy

O2 are doing that in the UK on an 18 month contract.

I've just now managed to get mine upgraded to version 2. The appstore is definitely a lot of fun - countless hours to be wasted here!

Ooooh the Apps store... So far I have been restrained, It is worth checking the reviews as some of them seem to be buggy, But so far its Scribble, VNClite and Outliner(which I used on PPC and this is as good)

Ok One week in and I find it does 99% of what I want, all thats missing is Flash and a ssh client.

I have to say mail is great and nicely integrated into gmail. Maps is really useful, and the AGPS realy helps for fast location.

A fun app is flashlite all it does is turn the screen white and turn up the brilliance.

I have found for IM Meebo is the best, I use meebo any way for PC and they have optimised it for iphone.

I think Stephen fry has done a very nice write up on his Dork Talk column http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/20 ... hone.apple
