One Small Step Towards VoIP for Cellcos

Written by martyndavies on Jul 16, 2008 - 11:40 PM

The GSMA Association (GSMA) today announced the completion of a successful trial of SIP-I technology to allow mobile operators to exchange voice traffic via VoIP.

Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer of the GSMA :

“SIP-I is the protocol of choice for mobile and fixed operators alike and is an important element of the GSMA’s strategy to help mobile operators migrate their networks to IP. With the help of Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks and TeliaSonera, we have demonstrated that SIP-I can work well across networks supplied by different vendors.”

Although in many ways IP is a commonplace technology today, the interconnection of voice is still done largely using legacy TDM links and SS7 signalling. One result of this is that even 3G to 3G calls need to be transcoded twice in order to travel across a legacy backbone using the standard 4kHz voice channel. With IP interconnection it will be possible to have trancoder-free operation, with higher voice quality, and potentially high-quality wideband speech too.

If the GSMA’s IPX initiative comes good, all cellcos will federate via SIP-I, probably through a small number of interconnect brokers, making internetworking simpler, and reconciliation of charges more straightforward for operators. Perhaps they’ll even pass some of the savings on to the customers?
