Ribbit Sells for $55 Million

Written by martyndavies on Jul 11, 2008 - 09:42 AM

Rumours abound about Ribbit, the self-styled “first phone company of Silicon Valley”, and whether the company has been bought by British Telecom or not. BT has been active the last couple of years with its own Web21c API and portal, that allows developers to write applications in a variety of programming environments to access BT’s core services including not only call control but SMS and presence. Integrating Ribbit’s browser-based Flex component to the list does seem to be in alignment with that, and a snip at $55 million.

Manchester, UK-based PhoneFromHere are competitors to Ribbit, and have their own standards-based browser-enabled phone technology. They have been watching the Ribbit story emerge.
Founder Tim Panton :
"This raises expectations, and reaffirms our belief in the value of this market, although it's sad that even British institutions like BT believe they need to look to the other side of the Atlantic for innovation, when they could find it much closer to home."

PhoneFromHere recently won the Big Chip International Award for Innovation.
