Hi just joined the group and am just getting into Voip as a hobby. I've downloaded Asterisk and just started playing around with it. And was wondering what tips people had for getting started building a voip network. What hardware would you recommened getting and books to read. Even though this is just a hobby I want to make sure everything I buy and do is scalable so i really aprreciate any tips. Thanks

Welcome to VoIP User!

hobby... scalable

Those two do not usually go hand in hand (although voip user is itself perhaps an exception to that).

What are the specific requirements? What's the end goal?

This might serve as a useful starting point:-

It's not really possible to talk hardware until you know the requirements, so might be worth just giving that some thought first before buying anything...

Follow the directions Dean has provided above. Also, you may want to use any search engines to find out what are the most common hardware used and what are their pros/cons. You will also find out the more a particular brand/model of a hardware used, the easier it is to find someone to lend his hand to help shall any problem arise due to some unforeseen hardware failure(s).
