Skype Go Mobile

Written by martyndavies on Apr 28, 2008 - 06:28 PM

It's been possible to use Skype on the move in various ways using products like iSkoot, Fring and Eqo, but now Skype have thrown their own hat in the ring with a mobile client, now available as a beta download.

Clients supported include Nokia , Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, so if you have a popular handset like the Nokia N95 or even the humble 6230i, then you're in luck. Other models include the Sony Ericsson W810i and the Motorola Razr V3. You can download from the web link, or directly from your mobile at skype.com/m.

A lot of the phones supported in the list have no intrinsic VoIP capability, and are often Java MIDP devices with limited processing power, so how is this achieved? Like Eqo and iSkoot, the call is actually established using 3G or GSM voice calling, then this goes via some kind of gateway to Skype so that you can access your Skype buddies. This means that the Skype-to-Skype calls are not free, but rather charged at a local per-minute rate. So it looks rather inspired the "3" Skype phone, Skype's successful co-operation with Hutchison 3G. Despite the calls being connected via the normal cellular channel, you still need a data plan, since this is how the Skype IM and presence is implemented.

Some indication of call and data costs can be found at the Skype page. Skype do not recommend that you use this while roaming away from your home country due to unpredictable fees.
