Hello

I'm getting a 401 error with X-Lite, even though I've reset my password (several times) and followed the setup instructions word for word.

Any help greatly appreciated.

This may still be due to the recent upgrade of Voipuser. There are a few things that are still to be done. I gather that nearly everything will probably be back as it was before the upgrade very soon now. Meanwhile, does your setup work for other Voip providers (perhaps try Voxalot)?

Yes, my other providers work perfectly on the hardware sip phone, but couldn't get voipuser to work so I switched to X-Lite and that's when I found the 401 error.

regards

Hi kels,

A 401 response to a REGISTER indicates that you have not supplied the correct username and password (or at least, your device has not responded to the security challenge for that request).

You need to make sure you have your username and password set, and if that still does not solve the problem, see if there are security related settings in your device that you can experiment with.

STUN server: stun.voipuser.org

Try changing the following (I've just listed the ones to change):-

Personal Provider Data
Username: kels [!at] sip.voipuser.org (replace the [!at] with a @)
Display name: kels

General Provider Data
Domain:sip.voipuser.org
Proxy server address: [blank]
Proxy server port: [blank]

Network
STUN enabled: No
STUN server: [blank]
STUN port: [blank]
STUN refresh time: [blank]
NAT refresh time: [blank]

any tips?

The most likely problem is the syntax of the "username" in the personal provider settings. Every device does this differently (annyingly). If the above doesn't work, try different combinations of just "kels" and "kels [at] voipuser.org".

STUN is a system for assisting in traversing any NAT device that you may have. We recently (a few months ago) upgraded our network to handle all of that server-side, so it's not needed anymore and we recommend you turn it off.

We don't allow posting of email addresses here to stop spam harvesting bots from having any success, which is why I can't type it in the above, but you should get the jist.

Thank you for all your replys - but it still doesn't register!

Could a mod please check my sip account?

5060 UDP open will at least allow the phone to register, so check that first. Then experiment with the username setting as mentioned above.

Thanks for the tip Dean

5060 is indeed pointing at my hardware, tried the various username settings, and still nothing!

Make sure that you have RTP ports forwarded as well (8000 - 8005 UDP will do or whatever your device is set to listen on. Alternatively use a STUN server (stun.ekiga.net is one that you could try).

You do not need the UDP ports forwarded, or STUN. In fact, I recommend you leave STUN disabled. We now proxy audio if you're behind NAT.

The issue is with your username. You may need to experiment a little with username and domain settings until you understand how your device is using them.

Tried many combinations of my username - won't register.

Doesn't register on X-Lite either.

What makes the problem even worse is that my two other sip accounts work perfectly.

Stuck!

Perhaps it would be worth giving Zoiper try as it is what I am using at present (while on holiday in the UK an I have no idea what setting the router is using). I am running STUN (stun.ekiga.net) it connects OK and I can make outgoing PSTN calls OK now. One question, what firewall does X=Lite detect? If it says you have "Full Cone" then that may be your problem. Voip user does not have an "out going proxy" so make sure that that entry is blank and the proxy server is "sip.voipuser.org".
