It's certainly possible. I live in Canada. I went to Toronto a couple of years ago. The hotel did not provide Internet access except at a hefty charge. I couldn't borrow any free WiFi either. However, a VoIP provider I was using (Primus) had Toronto numbers I could call where I could log into my account and place outgoing calls for free to home.
I used a long dial string to use this to call into my ISP at home. It worked fine! 50kbps. 1200 ms latency though, which is pretty bad, but the speed was reasonable.
If you merely want to use multiple computers on the Internet simultaneously, a router is the way to go. You can put many computers on the Internet simultaneously that way. Also, some IPs will give you multiple IP addresses to let you hook more than one computer up directly, without a router. You just need an Ethernet switch or hub to do this. (The router is a slightly more complex but more elegant solution.) |
