Hi,
Asterisk is a PBX, an office telephone exchange.
It provides a platform for all the services normally expected from a business telephone exchange: extensions, voicemail, routing etc.
It forms a gateway between your internal telephones and the public network, whether that is the PSTN, Internet or wet string.
Are you really after 10 simultaeneous calls?
10 lines suggests 20 extensions minimum in a busy call centre, or perhaps 80 in an office environment?
For 10 simultaeneous calls, an SPA is not going to be enough. You would need 10 of them and the ability to call between them is strictly limited. But they are great units to attach to an Asterisk PBX to give access to a fall over PSTN line when everything else breaks!
A bigger 'Industrial' gateway like Mediatex or Vegastream may be enough, provided everything is using the same technology, i.e. all the phones are SIP and everything goes out via the PSTN or Internet, and you do not need all the functions of a PBX i.e. Voice Mail, inter-office communications, ACD working etc.
It is not impossible that a gateway is necessary, or at least highly advisable for operational reasons, even if you use Asterisk, especially when dealing with the PSTN.
Prices for these start from £1000 depending upon the nature of what it is attached to.
A server suitable for Asterisk (say 3GHz PIV, 512MB RAM and hard drive) can be obtained new for under £400 and will happily serve perhaps 100-200 users.
You do need to think about what is necessary to attach it to users and the PSTN, but you get that problem anyhow.
You need to think about exactly what you want to do, then ask how do I do this? |
